The Dunedin Youth Orchestra is thrilled to be able to invite emerging composers in the southern region to submit orchestral scores for performance at iD Dunedin Fashion Week 2019. Selected scores will be performed by the Dunedin Youth Orchestra at the iD emerging designers gala, an event that will showcase emerging designers, performers and composers. Entries are open to those composers under the age of 25 who are residing and/or studying in the Otago/Southland region. Preference will be given to new works or those composed in 2017 or later. Scores will be judged on compositional merit, presentation and their suitability for the performance* so that a range of diverse scores reflecting New Zealand’s compositional strength are performed. No set number of scores will be accepted but the Dunedin Youth Orchestra expects at least two will be selected. Deadline for submissions is November 16th 2018 at 5pm, successful applicants will be notified on November 30th and scores and parts will be due to the librarian by the 31st December 2018.
General Provisions:
- This competition is open to New Zealand Citizens or permanent residents under the age of 25 residing and/or studying in the Otago/Southland region.
- Instrumentation of the works must not exceed (2,2,2,2/2,2,2,1/Timp + 1 percussion and Strings). Preference will be given to those works for full symphony orchestra although works for smaller forces may be considered. All compositions must include a full string orchestra with each string part not divide into more than two parts. (Excluding solos). Works featuring extended passages for solo instrument (ie. a concerto) or those using electronics will not be accepted due to the logistical limitations of the event. - Any non-standard items (string practice mutes etc.) must be provided by the composer.
- Pieces must not exceed 7 minutes in duration
- Each composer may submit ONE work to be considered by the selection panel.
- Each score must contain a title, complete and accurate list of instrumentation, brief programme note, date of composition and explanation of any unusual instrumental techniques.
- Scores must be submitted under a pseudonym, with no identifying information about the composer anywhere on the score.
- Scores must be submitted in PDF format and should be emailed to: [email protected], in addition the following Google form must be filled out by all applicants (Entry Form)
- Due date for scores is 5pm 16th November 2018. No late entries will be considered.
- The scores will be judged by a panel featuring conductors, composers and orchestral musicians. The panel’s decision is final. The panel reserves the right to select as many or as few scores as they see fit.
- The panel’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
- Successful applicants will be notified on the 30th of November. Following selection, applicants may be asked to make small adjustments to their scores.
- Should your work be accepted to be performed, the full score and parts must be provided to the DYO Librarian by the 31st of December 2018.
*We have been advised that pulsed music of a reasonable (walking) tempo is the preferred option of the event organising committee. This does not mean that other scores will not be accepted but it will be taken into consideration.
